Omega-3 fatty acids like those found in ALTRUM Nutritional Oils have made
headlines for helping to prevent heart disease, but memory loss, depression and even
learning problems can also result from omega-3 deficiency. High amounts of omega-3 may
inhibit tumors, prevent Alzheimer's and even relieve pain and inflammation.
Omega-3 Relieves Pain
"You can get a similar rate of relief from fish oil as you can get from aspirin, ibuprofin,
and other anti-inflammatory medications without gastrointestinal problems," says John
Klippel, MD, medical director of the Arthritis Foundation.
Omega-3 Fights Depression
Researchers also say that fish, more specifically fish oil, containing omega-3 fatty
acids is an effective antidepressant. Omega-3s for depression first drew interest when
scientists found that countries consuming the most fish had the fewest cases of depression.
Mothers in England who rarely ate fish during pregnancy doubled their risk of depression
compared to women who ate fish regularly.
Omega-3 Supports Brain Function
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated oils the body cannot create and are derived
mostly from seafood. Docosahexaenoic acis (DHA) is the particular fatty acid with the
most direct influence on brain development.
"DHA is concentrated in the brain right where the neurons communicate with each other
and all the signals pass back and forth," said Dr Joseph Hibbeln, a senior investigator
at the National Institutes of Health. "The DHA from omega-3 makes up the walls of neurons.
The body cannot manufacture DHA, so it has to get it from our diet."

One of the most critical roles of essential fatty acids
are in brain function. EFA deficiency can lead to impaired ability to learn and
recall information.
