The nutrient content of America's fruits and vegetables has gone down over the last
50 years, according to a disturbing new government report. Donald Davis, a biochemist
at the University of Texas in Austin, says that of 13 major nutrients in fruits and
vegetables tracked by the US Department of Agriculture from 1950 to 1999, six showed
noticeable declines.
Davis discussed his findings at a recent meeting of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science (AAAS) which convened in St Louis. The six declining nutrients
included protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin, and vitamin C.
Supplementation Corrects Nutrient Deficiencies
Many people believe that nutritional deficiencies are found only in Third World
countries where children are starving. The reality is that over 90 percent of Americans
are deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral. The typical modern diet does not
provide enough of the nutrients we need. Only 9 percent of the population consumes the
recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. A World Health Report stated
that our "modern" diet is too high in fat, sugar, sodium and saturated fat, and doesn't
provide enough vitmins, minerals or fiber to meet our nutritional needs. These nutrient
deficiencies are leaving our bodies devoid of vital nutrients, making us more susceptible
to all types of chronic diseases. Nutritional supplementation is essential to correcting
nutrient deficiencies and overcoming the chronic debilitating effects of poor dietary
choices.*
